More Christian Than Christian

from Two Thirds Of Our Lives [LP] by The Last Domino

/

about

THIS SONG IS NOT ANTI-CHRISTIAN; IT IS ANTI-HYPOCRISY.

People who would wear their religion on their sleeve, then behave in ways entirely antithetical to their belief system would do well to keep Christ in Christianity.

I grew up attending church in the suburban Midwest. For reasons including the cognitive dissonance highlighted in this song, I became disillusioned by the faith, and chose to conduct myself in accordance with my own internal code of ethics. Sadly, the hypocrisy and utter lack of awareness of the irony (Jesus' teachings vs. the actions of many "Christians") have only metastasized in decades since. Shout out to those who actually practice what they preach!

PHUN PHACT: Lots of fun little musical metaphors in this track. The opening diminished fifths were the jumping-off point for writing since they were once called the "Devil's interval", banned in many circles of classical music. The vocals were performed in classic mid-2000s Christian hardcore styles to further prove the song's point regarding my own moral and ethical belief system sans religion.

lyrics

LYRICS
---------
You sit there (in worship pose)
Bleating (archaic prose)
Repeating (a stale response)
Until you forget the meaning (and go in hate)
But we don’t (religionless)
We live it (and love)
How can He mean more to us than to you?

You sit there (in Jesus’ name)
Attending (spite-fueled campaigns)
Defending (a den of thieves)
The tables must be upended (re-educate)
Judge rightly (appearanceless)
As Christ did (in love)
This is the Gospel according to John

Stand up for what’s right like He would today
